I grew up in a small, wet Pacific Northwest town with many days spent at the local cinema. Raised on the magic of movies, I set off to film school in sunny L.A. and returned just as soon as I could to gray skies and pensive people. Luckily, I landed in the queer, creative haven of Portland, Oregon. Armed with a film degree and patchy knowledge of Final Cut Pro, I bought a DSLR camera and spent the following 15 years doing the real, hands-on education of video production.
Along the way, I started a production company for small, women-owned businesses and somehow got asked to make a documentary about Portland strip clubs. Directing & producing my feature film, ‘CHEERS! Portland, the Strip Club Capital of America,’ has been my most rewarding project to date.
When not submersed in screenwork, I enjoy traveling, paddle-boarding, bachata dancing, and spending time with my adventurous partner & very vocal Siberian husky.
Megan Ashley Alan is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. Her first feature documentary, ‘CHEERS! Portland, the Strip Club Capital of America,’ premiered at Cinema 21 and sold out 3 consecutive weekends of screenings in the summer of 2024.
Winning BEST DOCUMENTARY at the Paris International Women Film Festival and Honorable Mention at the Portland Film Festival, she is proud of the film’s deep dive into a provocative and misunderstood industry. A graduate of the inaugural BendFilm: Basecamp cohort, Megan’s interest in filmmaking extends to both non-fiction and fiction alike. She believes every visual project is an opportunity to educate and entertain.
